12" Music

Address: Street Montsió, 8. Ciutat Vella (Raval).
http://www.docemusic.com

Description: Maybe the only kind of music in which Barcelona has something serious to say is in electronic music. Home of one of the most renowned festival in Europe, the Sonar, birthplace of a great generation of DJs and a must for playing for every international artist, Barcelona's heart beats at techno rhythm. 12" Music is one of the stores you cannot miss if you are really into every kind of electronic music. House, Techno, Dub, everything you could know, they got it. And if they don't got it they could find it for you. Great personal assistance, good guidance, expert recomendations and a cabine where to listen the stuff they have makes a visit to this store almost a party. Besides, if you are a DJ, here you can find everything you need to play a session, from headphones to turntables and everything in between. A good choice.

Chandal

Address: Street Valldonzella, 29. Ciutat Vella (Raval)
http://www.proyectochandal.com/

Description: Curious store where the vinyls are just one small part of all the articles on sale. You shall have to dig among a weird accumulation of dozens of items you probably didn't know they exist to find a respectable collection of vinyls, mostly of electronic music. The good taste is confirmed, and the store definitely deserves a visit, but there are just a bunch of records so don't let your expectations fly too high.

Daily Records

Address: Street Sitges, 9. Ciutat Vella (Raval).
http://www.dailyrecords.es/

Description: For many people in Barcelona, due their long tradition, their first music store, and that always creates a deep feeling. Specialized in ska, hardcore, reggae, rocksteady, oi! and other "out law" styles, it's attitude towards music is genuine. Their only sell what they like and you can feel it as soon as you come in. The prices are mid range though you can also find some good opportunities. Most of the vinyls are used but you can trust the quality of them. Their weak point is the size of the store as it's one of the smallest in Barcelona. The good news are that almost everything they have, if you are into the music mentioned, you probably would like. Besides, they recommend real good records and play them for you, if you ask. The vinyl section is, by far, the most interesting. Long live to them!

Disco 100

Address: Street Escorial, 33. Gracia.

Description: A rara avis as it's not located in Ciutat Vella. Instead, you will find it in Gracia, another hood absolutely worth to visit. Among the aficionados of Barcelona it's considered one the shops with the best attention to the customer. They can recommend, suggest, advice or simply let you hear the record. Just ask the staff for any record you would looking for and many chances are that they could tell where you can find it. They store the records on a small warehouse inside the shop so they sell it to you without any damage. Besides, on the shelfs, under the records, you can find press reviews, so you can know more about the records. Their prices are quite interesting, though it's not one of the cheapest stores in Barcelona. But here you can find records almost impossible to find anywhere else in Barcelona. Another great points are the size of the store (larger than the regular size of a spanish music store) and the wide range of musical styles that you can find: from jazz to indie rock, hip-hop, rock, classic bands, folk, flamenco, electronic, etc... The weak point, from my point of view, is that the vinyl section is a little bit lame. They have the records that everybody else has and most of them are expensive reissues. In any case, I wish all the record stores in Spain would be like this.

Discos BCore

Address: Street Montmany, 25. Gràcia.
http://bcoredisc.com/distribucionBD.php

Description: Opened during the summer of 2011 in the very trendy neighborhood of Gràcia, this store is in fact the "frontstage" of the local record label BCore (http://www.bcoredisc.com), a cornerstone for spanish punk, garaje and rock since early 90's. Today's still a major influence and many eyes are permanently gazing upon their bands. As commented, you can be looking for records and at the same time peepingtomming on what's going in their premises. Focusing on the store, it's a must if you are interested in spanish bands of the last 20 years. Obviously their have all the records of their own bands on sale but it's also easy to find obscure or little known bands from almost DYI record labels. Also it's well stocked with latest releases and some fine reissues, some of them at a really good price, but it's hard to get surprised, besides that no second-hand records are on sale. Interesting, not essential, but a pleasant visit specially if you have time to loose on the streets surronding the store.

Discos Castelló

Address: Street Tallers, 3. Ciutat Vella (Raval)
http://www.discoscastello.es/main.htm

Description: Since 1935. The oldest store in Barcelona is becoming a soap opera like "Dallas". Stores that takes the same name but are not the same company, arguments between the owners, rumours of inminent store closings... The truth is it seems very likely that the most famous store in Barcelona won't be exisiting in a few months. We will see. The only good news are they are, apparently, finishing the existences so you can find real good bargains. In the good and old times you could find all kind of music, nowadays I don't know.

Discos Edison

Address: Street Riera Baixa, 10. Ciutat Vella (Raval)
http://www.discos-edisons.com/

Description: A mess, but a lovely mess. Thousands of records af all possible kind mixed up and every genre and age you could imagine. They are specialists in vinyl but also offer DVD, CD's, cassettes and even movies (some of them porno). Besides, singles are offered extensively. Prices goes from 20 something euros for collector's records to around 5 euros or even less but don't expect life changing albums at this range. They have choosed quantity over quality but with patience you always leave the store with some great records at a very good price. Digger's paradise.

Updating September '11: As soon as they can, they will close the store. Dont know if someone will run another record store.

Discos Impacto

Address: Street Tallers, 61. Ciutat Vella (Raval)
http://www.discosimpacto.com/

Description: Discos Impacto is where to go when you want to get surprised. They have all kind of genres, vinyl is really appreciated, and many records of minority artists or almost unknown albums. As it's habitual, merchandising of all kind it's also sold on this small shop. But don't get yourself wrong, their main raison d'etre are records. The staff maybe it's not the most gentle of the wold but they know inch by inch their store so if you need help don't be shy. Prices are very interesting, but please note that most of the vinyls are used. There you can find the best selection of bootlegs of Dylan, Bowie or Springsteen among others, a kind of record hard to find anywhere else in Barcelona. Besides, at the bottom of the store you will find one of the best collections of Hip Hop. In conclusion one of the few compulsory stores to visit in Barcelona. But you should go willing to get suprised, not to find a particular record.

Discos Juandó

Address: Street Giralt el Pellisser, 2. Ciutat Vella (Barri Gotic)
http://juando.vox.com/

Description: Placed in one of the most beautiful areas in Barcelona, this store offers a personal vision about what a music shop should be. The fact that the owner, Marcos, opened the store at the end of 2008 is undoubtedly a brave decision as it's only offering vinyl and minority genres in this time of music stores apocalypsis. All the records on sale are used vinyls of genres such as Soul, Jazz, Italo-Disco, Folk, Caribbean and stuff like that. There is also a huge collection of singles and 12" (many of them of electronic music and hip-hop old school). Prices are well orientated and you can start your purchase of LPs with just 1 euro, though the range it's up 20 euros. A place to find surprises and good taste.

Discos Paradiso

Address: Street Ferlandina, 39 (Ciutat Vella)
http://discosparadiso.com/

Description: Placed very nearly of the famous MACBA museum, offers a large selection of second hand vinyls. Due it's newness, this wide and large store it's still a little bit "cold" place but sure will become a hot spot very soon. Clearly orientated towards electronic music, they also offer a small but nice selection of many other genres, such as funk, hip-hop, indie, rock or even soundtracks. The store has also a small stage where some performances take place. The only negative point is that their collection, with the obvious exception of electronica, is some scant but I'm sure they will grow up.

Discos Revolver

Address: Street Tallers, 11 & 13. Ciutat Vella (Raval).
http://www.discos-revolver.com/

Description: Founded in 1991, this store is probably one of the most famous in Barcelona, and has earned it's fame with facts. They have two stores, one beside another, specialized, the larger one, in novelties and CDs of records of all kind of music and the other one in vinyls, with first printings, reissues and used ones. Moreover, some prices are very interesting and it's easy to find some real bargains. Due their size and catalogue, you can easily spend a couple of hours only trying to find out what they have on sale. The weak point is that the staff is considered a bit rough and snob, though I haven't noticed that (but I have found much better customer attention in other shops). An another weak point is that, as they sell all kind of music, you probably won't get surprised if you are really into some kind of genre. In any case, a must.

Discos Tesla

Address: Street Tallers, 3. Ciutat Vella (Raval).
http://www.discostesla.com/

Description: Discos Tesla exemplifies perfectly the current (and long) crisis that are facing all the record stores in Barcelona. Step by step, the weight of the records in the store is decreasing in front of merchandising, memorabilia and clothes typical of some urban tribes and musical styles. One day, the store was almost full dedicate to punk, ska, hip-hop and metal but today they still have some stuff in CD worth to visit at this small shop. As their prices are very competitive, a visit may bring a nice surprise.

El Acumulador Discográfico

El Acumulador Discográfico

Address: Street D'Espalter, 6 (Raval) 08001http://elacumulador.blogspot.com/

Description: Recently opened on the former premises of the now extinct record store Raval Groove. This is an example of an entrepeneur who made his way of living through his hobby. First started as an online shop (which still runs today) the owner decided to have a phisical store where the customer can feel and touch the records and have a profitable talk with him. It's a good idea to visit the online shop and then pick up the records personally so transport expenses can be saved. Very eclectic taste, you can find literally any record you can imagine but it's cleary inclined towards sisxtires and seventies with a strong presence of spanich groups.

Description: Founded in 1991, Etnomusic is focused on, as you probably have already guessed, what is known as "World Music". Music from Magreb, África, Asia, Celta, Folk, Far East, Reggae, etc... All the music that usually does not appears on the trend magazines, can be found here. If not, the staff can order for you all the records you want. Besides, cloths and paraphernalia are also on sale. A good choice as almost is sure you will find something new. Lately, some vinyls are being sold for first time. A short but nice selection.

Gong Discos

Address: Street Consell de Cent, 343. Eixample.
http://www.gongdiscos.com/

Description: Gong Discos are the Spanish FNAC. Usually I wouldn't include this kind of shops on a list like this but I must make an exception just in case you would looking for mainstream music. Their prices are quite cheap, there are many records, you could found DVDs and videogames and they have air conditioning on summer. What else can you ask? Quality? Personality? Not here. Besides, they have some other shops in Barcelona but this one is the largest. Ideal for music consumers, not for music lovers.

Jazz Messengers

Address: Street Còrsega, 202. Eixample.
http://www.jazzmessengers.com/

Description: Definitely, one of the jewels of the Barcelona's small musical crown. If someone like Haruki Murakami thinks that the store deserves a visit, then we can guess that we won't be disappointed. Obviously, only jazz it's on sale. Better said, tons and tons of jazz from all over the world. Mainly in CD but also with a good collection of vinyls, specially high quality reissues. There is also a small section of blues and other "black sounds". The staff knows a lot about jazz and are willing to show it off, so no reason to be shy. Finally, prices are not so high as it would seemed, though don't expect too many bargains.

Kebra Disc

Address: Street Sitges, 3. Ciutat Vella (Raval)

Description: If you would like to know how was a regular store in Spain in the mid 80's, make a visit to this small shop in the heart of the musical epicenter of Barcelona. With almost all their catalogue in vinyl (mostly used) and even some cassettes on sale, their offer mainly punk-rock, reggae, soul, jazz and other genres buth with few or no novelties at all. It's a store where they buy used records and make no orders to the main distributors, but that does not means that their large collection is senseless. They really know how and what they to want to sell. It's one of those stores that creates a feeling of membership, I'm sure that you know what I mean.

Description: Don't let the kinky look of the store scares you as you are in front of the best store in electronic music in Barcelona. Not only they have a shop but also are distributors of many artists, and not only sell records, they have everything you need to become a famous DJ (except the talent for selling, of course). So you won't regreat to walk 10 minuts from street Tallers and enter in this wide and surprising store. Once again, we must remind that is a store DJ-orientated but the regular electronic music buyer may found great surprises. Besides, they have the latest of the latest and emerging new styles. Don't forget about this palindrome.

Lostracks

Address: Street Vic, 21. Gràcia
http://www.lostracks.es

Description: Recently opened, stocks a obscure collection of mainly electronic music. In spite of it's a small store, the owners has some very eclectic taste so it's possible to find rare gems has no mainstream records are sold. Besides it's focused on all ranges of electronic music, many of them for DJ purposes, some rock, indie, new wave or ambient music can be find as well. In addition, as they also sale on-line, all the records can also be found on their website, so it's a good idea to check it out before going to the store. On the store, the prices are slightly cheaper. If you want to go there, and you find the door closed, don't turn back before ringing the bell.

Luchador Records

Address: Street Ferlandina, 39. Ciutat Vella (Raval).
http://www.myspace.com/luchadormedia

Description: Barcelona's latest addition, people from Luchador Records doesn't want to wait and seat on their chairs to wait for customers to come in. Besides a record store filled with latest releases in indie, electronic, folk and some other minor genres, they run a small label, issue a fanzine and even set up a small venue where they organize some concerts. Talking about the store, they focus one latest releases and reissues, always looking for a good price. Not really sure if they will overcome amazons and webstores like that but it's carefully curated selection can be their major point of interest if you'll find yourself a similar taste to them. Step by step are also growing a small second hand record shelf which I have many expectations. A perfect starting point to begin your tour with Barcelona's sadly overrated music underground scene.

Mercat de Sant Antoni

Address: Ronda Sant Pau/Street Comte d’Urgell

Barcelona's most famous flea market can give a good chance to purchase some interesting records at a reasobable price. Opened only on sunday's morning until 14:00, more or less, even if you are not interested in records, you can buy tons of books, news and used, comics, video-games, coins, posters, Barcelona's souvenirs and all kind of different stuff. Specifying about records, vinyl is the king but also CD lovers will be satisfied. Don't expect much quality but if you are really into the art of bargaining you could get some interesting records at good price. And there is always the possibility of finding a little treasure, ¿who knows? Also it's mandatory to keep an eye wide open and do not allow to much familiarities.

Music World

Address: Street Rosselló 201. Eixample.
http://www.discosmusicworld.com/

Description: This store has two handicaps. First of all, the only one really important, no vinyls are on sale. Maybe will be sold soon, ¿who knows? The other one is that it's not trendy. It's not in the Raval, no vinyls, the staff is very gentle, no latest novelties... Jose Luis, the owner, is not concerned about if his store is on the fashion blogs or not. He only cares of having good music. And I think he has achieved it. A famous shop in Barcelona to sell the records you don't want anymore, the collection of used CD is large, diverse and with very good prices. Regarding the new CD, prices are some high but you can find imported records difficult to purchase anywehere else in Barcelona. If they had some vinyl on sale, my evaluation would be much higher.

Tasmaniac Records

Address: Street Ramellers, 15.  Ciutat Vella (Raval).
http://www.myspace.com/tasmaniac_records

Description: Another destination only for electronic music followers. As it's almost mandatory in this kind of shops, records are just one part of the items on sale. Once again, an amateur DJ can find stuff to add to his equipment. Besides, it's an excellent place to find information about raves, sessions and concerts. Specifying on records, the collection is focused on 12" for DJ purposes and dark genres such as dub and drum'n'bass, so unless your interests goes this way, better spend your time in another shops. But if you want to discover the electronic music scene of Barcelona, this is a very good place to start.

Wah Wah

Address: Street Riera Baixa, 14. Ciutat Vella (Raval)
http://www.wah-wahsupersonic.com/

Description: According to my taste the best record store in Barcelona. Just to listen their background music deserves a visit. Besides, probably has the larger stock all over Barcelona. But be warned very few novelties are on sale. If you are looking for them better go to another shop. Wah Wah is a place where to learn about music, every time you make a visit you may discover some great new stuff. Many musical genres are available, some of them hard to find anywhere else in Barcelona. There is even a nice electronic music section that if it's not open when you are there, you can ask the owner to open it for you. Their weak point are prices. They know they are good and make you pay for it, not to mention that many records can also be found on another stores at better prices. Prices goes from 10 euros to 200 euros, so definitely you only should buy those records hard to find on another places. Many reissues are on sale but most of them are second hand vinyls. An absolutely must but their high prices makes mandatory to think twice what do you purchase. Besides, their customer service is quite poor and many times the owner is rude and unpleasant.
